In plain terms: The identification work done on bacteria grown from a urine culture, naming each organism that comes up rather than just counting how many colonies grew. It is the step that turns a positive urine culture into a usable answer - which bug is causing the infection. It is reported per isolate, so a urine growing two different organisms involves the work twice. Think of an older patient with burning on urination and confusion, whose urine sample goes to the lab. Growing the bacteria and naming them tells the doctor whether the usual first-choice antibiotic will work or whether something more resistant is involved. You'll typically see CPT 87088 on a bill or explanation of benefits (EOB) when a clinician performs or bills for this service.
