CPT (Current Procedural Terminology)

CPT is the code set used to report medical procedures and services. The American Medical Association maintains it, and it forms Level I of HCPCS. Most physician services under the Physician Fee Schedule are identified by a CPT code.

What CPT codes look like Copy link

CPT has three categories. Category I codes, which most services use, are five digits—for example, CPT 99213. Category II codes are four digits followed by F and track performance measures. Category III codes are four digits followed by T and track emerging technology. The AMA holds the copyright on CPT descriptions, so our public pages show computed rates and our own context instead of the AMA’s text.

CPT in the fee schedule Copy link

In each quarterly Physician Fee Schedule release, CMS assigns every CPT code a status indicator, RVUs where the service is payable, and other payment-policy indicators. Those values—not the AMA’s descriptive text—determine payment, and our code pages calculate from them and keep each release’s values.

Frequently asked Copy link

Who maintains CPT?

The American Medical Association maintains the CPT code set and holds the copyright on the official descriptions.

Why don't you show the official CPT description?

CPT descriptions are AMA-copyrighted, and showing them requires an AMA license. Instead we show the code, its Medicare allowed amount, and our own explanation.
