## What it is

Needle electromyography of a single arm or leg, where a fine needle electrode is placed into muscle to listen to its electrical activity at rest and during contraction, and the muscles alongside the spine that share the same nerve roots are examined too. The complete version means the neurologist samples a broad set of muscles across the limb rather than the handful covered by the limited version, which is what allows a nerve root problem to be separated from a single-nerve problem. It is performed in the same session as nerve conduction testing, so it is recorded in addition to those studies.
