## What it is

Allergy testing in which small amounts of prepared allergen extracts are introduced into the surface of the skin, usually on the forearm or back, by pricking or scratching rather than by deep injection. A raised itchy bump surrounding a red flare within about fifteen minutes signals a reaction to that allergen, and a histamine and a saline spot are placed alongside as controls. The record is kept per individual allergen applied, so a panel covering many pollens, foods, moulds and animal danders is counted by the number of separate tests placed.
