## What it is

An add-on to a heart ultrasound that measures the speed and direction of blood flow using pulsed and continuous wave Doppler, shown as a waveform trace rather than as a picture. Those velocity traces are what let a cardiologist estimate the pressure difference across a valve, grade how tight a narrowing or how severe a leak is, and infer pressure in the lung circulation. The full version means flow is sampled across the relevant valves and chambers rather than at a single spot.
