## What it is

Photographs of the outside of the eye and the surrounding structures, including the eyelids, lashes, conjunctiva, cornea, and iris. Unlike retinal photography, the camera is aimed at the visible front surface rather than the interior, often through a slit lamp for close detail. The images document the size, position and appearance of a lesion, scar, droop, or misalignment so that change over time can be judged objectively. Photographs of this kind also support surgical planning and prior authorization requests.
