## What it is

An optical coherence tomography scan of the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The device uses light waves to build a cross-sectional picture of the retinal layers, revealing swelling, fluid, thinning, or scar tissue that cannot be judged by looking at the eye alone. The scan takes seconds, does not touch the eye, and produces images the doctor interprets and reports on. A sibling code covers the same technology aimed at the optic nerve instead of the retina, which is the version used mainly for glaucoma.
