# CPT 87641

## What it is

A molecular test aimed specifically at methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, amplifying the genetic marker that confers the resistance rather than simply confirming staph in general. Results come back in hours, which is why hospitals lean on it for admission screening and for deciding who needs contact precautions. A positive means the strain will not respond to the usual penicillin-family antibiotics, so treatment has to go elsewhere.
