## What it is

A molecular test on a cervical sample that looks for the human papillomavirus strains most likely to lead to cancer, the group that includes types 16 and 18. It detects viral genetic material directly rather than judging how cells look under a microscope, so it answers whether a dangerous strain is present, not whether the cells have already changed. The low-risk types behind common genital warts are a different test.
