## What it is

A molecular test that looks for the genes making enterococcus bacteria resistant to vancomycin, typically vanA or vanB. Instead of growing the organism and challenging it with antibiotics over several days, the lab copies and detects the resistance gene itself from a swab or culture and has an answer within hours. It settles one narrow question: is the resistance gene there or not.
