## What it is

An immunoassay that detects hepatitis B surface antigen, a protein on the outer coat of the virus that appears in blood when someone is actively infected. A positive result means live infection is present - either recent or long-standing - as opposed to the antibody tests that indicate past exposure or vaccination. It is the anchor test of the hepatitis B panel.
