## What it is

Identification of an organism from a culture or isolate using a molecular probe with an amplification step, rather than the traditional route of growing it out further and running biochemical reactions. Amplifying the target genetic material lets the lab name the organism from very small amounts and often much faster than culture-based methods. It is reported per organism identified from a given culture or isolate.
