## What it is

A blood test for antimicrosomal antibodies, the thyroid autoantibodies more commonly referred to today as thyroid peroxidase antibodies. Their presence indicates that the immune system is attacking the thyroid gland, which is the underlying mechanism in Hashimoto thyroiditis and is also frequently seen in Graves disease. The test is reported per antibody tested, so a broader thyroid autoimmunity workup may involve more than one.
