## What it is

Times how many seconds a plasma sample takes to clot once reagents kick off one branch of the clotting cascade. It checks the intrinsic and shared portions of that cascade, which makes it the standard test for following heparin given through a drip and for chasing down unexplained bleeding. It is normally paired with prothrombin time, which probes the other branch - together they narrow down where a clotting problem sits.
