## What it is

Measures transferrin, the protein that ferries iron through the bloodstream from storage sites to the bone marrow where red cells are built. It is closely tied to total iron binding capacity, which estimates the same carrying capacity by a different route. Transferrin tends to climb when the body is short of iron and drop with chronic inflammation, liver disease, or poor nutrition.
