## What it is

Measures alanine aminotransferase, an enzyme concentrated far more heavily in liver cells than anywhere else in the body. Because of that concentration, a rise points more directly at the liver than its partner enzyme AST does, which is found in muscle and heart tissue too. The two are ordinarily drawn together as part of a liver panel and read as a pair.
