# CPT 84450

## What it is

Measures aspartate aminotransferase, an enzyme that sits inside liver cells but is also plentiful in heart and skeletal muscle. When those cells are damaged the enzyme spills into the bloodstream, so a raised level flags tissue injury without pinning down the location. It is almost always interpreted next to ALT, its more liver-specific counterpart, and the ratio between the two carries its own meaning.
