## What it is

Measures only the small share of testosterone travelling in the blood unattached to carrier proteins - the fraction that can actually enter cells and act. It differs from the total testosterone test, which counts bound and unbound hormone together in one number. Free testosterone is often the more meaningful figure when carrier-protein levels are pushed up or down by age, obesity, liver disease, or thyroid problems.
