# CPT 84270

> Not at a published national rate. CPT 84270 carries status X (statutory exclusion) in the Q3 2014 release. The statutory definition of physician services does not include this item. Treat the blank amount as unpriced, not as $0.

## What it is

Measures sex hormone binding globulin, the carrier protein that grips most of the testosterone and estrogen circulating in blood and keeps it from acting on tissues. Because it controls how much hormone is actually available, this result is normally read next to a total testosterone level rather than on its own. Levels drift with age, weight, thyroid function, and liver health, which is exactly why the test exists.
