## What it is

Measures the total concentration of protein in a blood sample - overwhelmingly albumin plus the various globulins - run on a chemistry analyzer rather than estimated with a refractometer, and drawn from blood rather than urine or another body fluid. It is a standard line on comprehensive metabolic testing. Taken alone it is a blunt instrument; its usefulness comes from reading it next to albumin, because the gap between the two indicates whether the globulin fraction is raised, as it can be in chronic inflammation, liver disease, or plasma-cell disorders such as myeloma.
