## What it is

Measures potassium in a blood sample - serum, plasma, or whole blood rather than urine. Potassium governs how nerve and muscle cells fire, and the heart in particular tolerates very little drift in either direction, which makes it one of the most closely watched values in all of medicine. It is frequently ordered on its own, outside a full panel, to recheck a previous abnormal result or to keep tabs on someone taking drugs that push potassium up or down.
