## What it is

Measures the total amount of alkaline phosphatase in the blood, an enzyme that comes mainly from two places: the small bile ducts inside the liver, and actively remodelling bone. A raised result therefore means one of those two systems is busy or irritated, and follow-up testing - a GGT for the liver, or a bone-specific fraction - is what tells the two apart. It is a standard component of routine liver and metabolic blood panels.
