# CPT 83721

## What it is

Measures LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol, directly in a blood sample instead of arriving at it by arithmetic. A standard lipid panel usually estimates LDL from total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides, and that estimate degrades badly when triglycerides are high. Measuring the particle directly sidesteps that problem, and some direct methods also work without requiring the patient to fast beforehand.
