## What it is

Measures lipoprotein(a), a variant of LDL cholesterol that carries an extra protein making it unusually good at lodging in artery walls and at encouraging clot formation. Unlike ordinary cholesterol numbers, the level is set largely by inherited genetics and barely moves with diet, exercise, or standard statin treatment, so it is generally checked once rather than tracked over time. It helps account for cardiovascular risk that a routine lipid panel leaves unexplained.
