## What it is

Measures lipase, the fat-digesting enzyme produced by the pancreas, in a blood sample. When the pancreas becomes inflamed the enzyme leaks into the bloodstream and the level rises sharply. It stays elevated longer than amylase does, which is why it has become the preferred blood test for pancreatitis, especially in patients who present a day or two after their pain started.
