# CPT 83615

## What it is

Measures lactate dehydrogenase, an enzyme present in nearly every tissue in the body and spilled into the blood whenever cells are damaged. Because it is so widespread, a high result reliably says that cells are breaking down somewhere without saying where. It is used as a broad marker of tissue injury, as a sign that red blood cells are being destroyed, and as a way of tracking disease activity in several cancers, particularly lymphomas.
