## What it is

Measures the total amount of insulin in a blood sample, counting both the free hormone and the portion bound to other proteins. Insulin is what the pancreas releases to move glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells. The number is close to meaningless on its own, so it is nearly always interpreted next to a glucose result drawn from the same moment - the question is not how much insulin there is, but how much there is for that blood sugar.
