## What it is

Measurement of folate, one of the B vitamins, in the liquid portion of blood. Folate is needed to build DNA and to make red blood cells, and a deficiency produces anemia with abnormally large red cells - the same picture as vitamin B12 deficiency, which is why the two are usually tested together. Serum folate reflects recent intake and can shift with a few days of eating, so it is a less stable measure of long-term stores than the red-cell folate test.
