    "description": "Measurement of ferritin, the protein that stores iron inside cells, which serves as the best single indicator of the body's total iron reserves. A low ferritin is essentially diagnostic of iron deficiency, and it falls before the hemoglobin does, so it catches the problem early. The complication is that ferritin also rises during inflammation, infection, and liver disease, so a normal or high value does not always rule out iron deficiency and is usually read alongside other iron studies. Very high levels can also signal iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis.",
