## What it is

Measurement of estradiol, the most biologically active form of estrogen, in blood. It is used to assess ovarian function and estrogen status - confirming menopause, investigating absent or irregular periods, evaluating some causes of infertility, and following patients on hormone therapy. In men and in postmenopausal women, unexpectedly high estradiol can point toward a hormone-producing tumor or excess conversion of androgens in body fat.
