## What it is

Measurement of total creatine kinase, an enzyme concentrated in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, and the brain that leaks into the blood when muscle cells are damaged. This is the overall total; separate codes cover the breakdown into isoenzymes that indicate which tissue the enzyme came from. Very high values are the hallmark of rhabdomyolysis, and modest elevations are common with muscle injury, intense exertion, or muscle-related side effects of medication.
