## What it is

Measurement of the total amount of calcium circulating in blood, counting both the free, active portion and the portion bound to proteins such as albumin. Calcium levels are tightly controlled by the parathyroid glands, vitamin D, and the kidneys, so an abnormal result usually points to one of those systems rather than to diet. Because much of the calcium travels bound to albumin, results are interpreted alongside the albumin level; the separate ionized calcium test measures only the free fraction.
