## What it is

Measurement of amylase, a digestive enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas and the salivary glands. Levels rise sharply when the pancreas is inflamed, so the test is a standard part of working up sudden severe abdominal pain. Amylase rises and falls faster than lipase, the other pancreatic enzyme test, so the two are often ordered together or interpreted alongside each other.
