## What it is

A sensitive urine test that measures small amounts of albumin - far below what a standard dipstick can detect - and reports an actual number rather than just positive or negative. Small quantities of albumin leaking into the urine are one of the earliest signs that the kidneys' filters are being damaged, which is why this test is a cornerstone of diabetes and hypertension care. It is usually paired with a urine creatinine measurement so the result can be expressed as a ratio that corrects for how dilute the sample is.
