## What it is

A urine drug screen run on laboratory instrumentation - typically immunoassay methods on a chemistry analyzer - rather than read by eye from a cup or card. It covers any number of drug classes tested on a single date of service and is reported once for that day no matter how broad the panel. Compared with the visually read screens, the instrumented version is more sensitive and produces a machine-generated result, but it is still presumptive: it flags likely classes, not specific drugs or amounts. Positive findings that affect care are normally followed by definitive testing that identifies the exact substance.
