## What it is

A PET scan performed on a combined PET/CT scanner, where the CT portion is acquired at the same sitting to correct the PET signal for body density and to pin the hot spots to precise anatomy. PET shows metabolic activity - typically glucose uptake by a radioactive sugar tracer - so tumors and other active tissue light up. Within the PET/CT group this is the limited-area member, covering a single region such as the chest, the head and neck, or one organ, as opposed to the torso-length and head-to-toe versions.
