## What it is

A complete plain X-ray of the ankle, taken from at least three angles rather than the basic pair. The third picture is usually a mortise view - the leg turned slightly inward so the joint space between the ankle bone and the two leg bones lines up evenly. That view is what reveals subtle widening from a ligament injury. A shorter two-view ankle study has its own code.
