## What it is

A partial-thickness corneal transplant in which only the innermost layer is replaced. The endothelium is the single sheet of pump cells lining the back of the cornea that keeps it clear by drawing fluid out; when those cells fail the cornea swells and vision clouds. The surgeon strips the diseased layer and slides a thin donor disc into the eye, floating it into place with an air or gas bubble instead of stitching in a full-thickness graft. Recovery is faster and the eye structurally stronger than with a traditional full-thickness transplant.
