## What it is

Surgery to free the median nerve where it is squeezed at the wrist. The surgeon divides the transverse carpal ligament, the tough band forming the roof of the carpal tunnel, which immediately enlarges the tunnel and relieves pressure on the nerve. It can be done through a small open palm incision or endoscopically, and the ligament is left divided rather than repaired.
