## What it is

Reopening a narrowed or blocked artery in the thigh or behind the knee from the inside, using a catheter that actively removes plaque, by shaving, sanding, or vaporizing it, rather than simply pressing it aside. Balloon angioplasty performed in that same artery during the session counts as part of this entry rather than as a separate procedure. One code covers the whole femoral and popliteal territory in a leg no matter how many spots along it are treated, and neighbouring codes describe balloon work alone, a stent, or a stent combined with atherectomy.
