## What it is

Placement of an implanted port: a small reservoir with a tough silicone top is buried in a pocket under the skin, usually on the upper chest, and joined to a catheter that is tunneled beneath the skin and threaded into a large central vein near the heart. Nurses use it by pushing a special needle through the skin into the reservoir, so nothing dangles outside the body between treatments and the patient can shower and swim normally.
