## What it is

Treatment of a leaking main superficial vein in the leg, usually the great or small saphenous, by injecting a foamed medication that irritates the lining so the vein swells shut and is gradually absorbed by the body. Ultrasound guides the needle and the operator uses compression maneuvers to hold the foam in the target segment rather than letting it drift. No heat is used, so there is no need for the numbing fluid injected around the vein in heat-based methods.
