## What it is

Surgical correction of a bunion — the bony bump and inward drift of the big toe known as hallux valgus — in which the surgeon also removes the base of the first bone of the big toe to realign the joint and relieve pressure. The sesamoid bones beneath the joint may be removed in the same session when they contribute to the deformity. It is one of several distinct bunion repairs, separated in the fee schedule by exactly which bone work is performed.
