## What it is

Repair of a break through the flared bone at the top of the thigh, at or below the bony bumps where the big hip muscles attach, using a metal rod driven down the hollow center of the femur. A screw or blade usually runs from the rod up into the hip ball to hold the head fragment, and additional locking screws or wires may be used. The rod-down-the-canal technique is what separates this from repairs done with a side plate and screws.
