# CPT 22840

> Medicare paid $785.95 for CPT 22840 in the office (non-facility) setting and $785.95 in a facility under the Q4 2014 Physician Fee Schedule, effective October 2014. These are the national allowed amounts before the ~2% sequestration cut and before locality (GPCI) adjustment.

## What it is

Metal hardware placed along the back of the spine to hold it still while a fusion heals, anchored only at the ends of the construct rather than gripping each vertebra along the way. Think of a rod fixed top and bottom, with the vertebrae in between spanned rather than individually gripped. It accompanies a spinal fusion rather than standing on its own, and it is distinguished from segmental fixation, where every level along the rod gets its own anchor point.
