# CPT 17314

## What it is

Mohs surgery removes a skin cancer in rounds: the surgeon takes a thin layer of tissue, maps it, and examines it under the microscope while the patient waits, then goes back only where tumor still reaches the edge of the specimen. This code covers a repeat round of that cut-and-check cycle on the trunk, an arm, or a leg, after the opening round has already been accounted for. Two things separate it from its neighbors in the family: the body region (trunk and limbs rather than the face, scalp, hands, feet, or genital area) and the fact that it is a follow-up round rather than the first. Each round covers up to a set number of tissue blocks, with further blocks beyond that handled by a different code.
