## What it is

Anesthesia care during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a treatment for severe depression and certain other psychiatric conditions in which a brief electrical stimulus is delivered to the brain under general anesthesia to produce a controlled seizure. The anesthesia is brief but requires a rapid-acting general anesthetic plus a muscle relaxant so the seizure does not cause a visible convulsion or injury, along with airway support for the few minutes the patient is unconscious.
